Step 5,567,238

I need some advice from someone that visits a gym on a regular basis. I usually go around 5AM. There are only a couple of other people working out at that time. One lady uses the treadmill the whole time while another guy uses virtually the whole gym, and that is my problem. I start my workout the same way each time and follow the same path through my workouts. I choose to go one machine at a time. I only take thirty seconds to a minute between sets so I am not hogging equipment for longer than five minutes.

My counterpart must workout for over an hour everyday. He has been at the gym every morning that I've been there. He starts out on the elliptical machine, but then he moves into the weight training area where my issue begins. This guy seems to use five or six different machines at once. I know that it is common practice to alternate sets between two different machines to rest one body part while working on another. This guy just moves about in such a fashion that I never know what machines he is using. Sometimes I get to a machine that he is apparently using even though I hadn't seen him on it during the last six sets that I did. He always seems put off by me interrupting his flow. What is the protocol here? I haven't said anything to him about it because I'm not sure if he is even in the wrong. The guy looks like he has been hitting the gym for years so he obviously has more experience than me. The one thing he does that I know is wrong is leaving weight on the bench press bar after he finishes. I shouldn't have to clean up his free weights so I can start my workout. If he is wrong about that, he can be wrong about everything.

I workout at a gym each morning, and like your gym, the same people are generally there each morning.

If he seems put off my your interrupting his flow, then so be it. The proper etiquette is to share the machines, as they are for all to use. If the machine doesn't appear to be in use, which it sounds like that is the case then it is fair game. Since he is working a circuit that seems to quite random you can't know which machine he is using. Therefore, you should just continue as normal.

If you happen to be on a machine that he wants to use, then perhaps you allow him to do a set while you are resting between sets. That is proper gym etiquette.

I agree, you shouldn't have to clean up his free weights on the bar. That is rude as well.
